TIL taking photos with my phone horizontal instead of vertical changed everything

I used to just snap vertical pics of everything. Random angle shots of my cat, plates of food, whatever. Then last month I went to the Grand Canyon. Took maybe 20 vertical shots. Looked terrible later. Cropped and zoomed all wrong. Switched to horizontal for the last 3 overlooks. The difference was night and day. Full landscape fit. No weird empty sky or missing river. Has anyone else noticed phone cameras just work better sideways for outdoor stuff?

One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough is how vertical video affects people with certain visual conditions. My buddy has a bit of tunnel vision and vertical shots are actually easier for him to process because his eyes don't have to scan side to side as much. Horizontal landscapes are beautiful but they can be overwhelming for someone whose field of view is already narrowed. There's also the issue of how screens have trained our brains. We scroll vertically on phones so vertical photos feel more natural in that context even if horizontal captures more of the scene. It really depends on what you're trying to do with the image and who will be looking at it.

Wait omg you had the exact same Grand Canyon experience as me? I took like 50 vertical shots before someone told me to flip my phone sideways and it was a total game changer. The wide view of the canyon just looked sad and squished in portrait mode. Now I even take pics of my dinner plates horizontal if the food is spread out good. Your point about tunnel vision makes total sense though, never thought about that.
