That overheard chat about burning sage for bad vibes changed my view on decluttering

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday and heard two people talking about how burning sage helped them let go of stuff they were hoarding. They said the smoke made them focus on what actually mattered in their space instead of what was just taking up room. Has anyone else found a weird ritual or trick that helped them clear out clutter for real?

Funny you bring that up because I literally did this last weekend. I lit a candle and walked through each room with it, telling myself I was only keeping things that made the flame burn steady. Sounds ridiculous but it actually worked for clearing out a bunch of old paperwork and clothes I was holding onto. The ritual made me stop and think about each item instead of just tossing stuff in a box. I think the key is finding something that forces you to slow down and actually look at what you own. Have you tried something like that or is there a weird trick you already use?

Idk if this counts but I read somewhere that some people do a "reverse moving box" method where you pretend you're moving out and only unpack what you actually need after a week. The burning sage thing you mentioned sounds pretty interesting though, maybe it's just me but having a ritual like that makes the whole process feel less like a chore and more like you're actually clearing energy along with the clutter. I bet the smoke kinda forces you to be present with each item too, similar to what hall.nora said about the candle flame trick.
