Talked to a retired mechanic at the coffee shop yesterday

He told me he never used synthetic oil in his trucks and they all ran past 200k miles. Said regular oil changes matter way more than the type. Ive been spending extra on synthetic for 5 years, think im overpaying?

Wait so you've been dropping extra cash on synthetic this whole time? That hurts man, I feel your pain. Honestly the old school guys have a point, it's all about keeping up with that regular maintenance.

My buddy ran his 200k mile Silverado on conventional its whole life and that truck still runs fine... people act like you're destroying your engine if you don't use the fancy stuff. I've seen plenty of high mileage cars at the shop that never saw a drop of synthetic and they're still chugging along. The real killer is ignoring oil changes altogether or using the wrong viscosity. If you're changing it on schedule with decent conventional oil you're probably fine for most daily drivers. All this synthetic hype feels like marketing more than anything else honestly.
