My dog's barking at the mailman went from chaos to calm in 60 days, here's how it happened

Last spring my beagle mix would lose his mind every time the mail truck came down the block, like full on lunging at the window and howling for 15 minutes straight. I started doing this thing where I'd give him a treat the second the truck appeared, before he even barked, then another one when it passed by. After about 6 weeks he stopped barking entirely and now he just sits by the door with his tail wagging when the mailman drops off packages. Has anyone else broken a habit by timing treats to the trigger instead of trying to correct the behavior after it starts?
