I finally hit 500 hours of audiobook listening this year and it changed how I work

I kept track on a little app on my phone because I was curious how much time I actually spend with headphones in. Turns out I’m at 512 hours as of last Sunday. That’s basically 21 full days of listening while I’m laying floors by myself. I do a lot of prep work where I’m just cutting and measuring, so my hands are busy but my brain isn’t. I started with thrillers but now I’m into history books about old construction methods. It’s wild how much random info sticks with you when you’re not trying to memorize it. Has anyone else hit a weird milestone like this that snuck up on you?

...and the thing that really made it click for me was switching to 1.2x speed. I resisted it for the longest time because I thought I'd miss details, but it actually keeps my brain more locked in. For hands-on work like your floor laying, that's key. You get into that rhythm where your hands know what to do and your ears are just grabbing everything at a pace that feels natural. I'd say try bumping it up half a notch, see if your retention actually gets better. Makes a big difference when you're doing repetitive cuts and measurements all day.
