I asked a guy at a bus stop in Phoenix why he carries a notebook everywhere, and his answer stuck with me
Last Tuesday I was waiting for the 7:10 bus in Phoenix and this older guy next to me was writing in a beat up notebook. I asked him what he was working on and he said he writes down one question every day that he actually wants an answer to, then spends the day asking people until someone knows. He showed me his page from that morning: 'why do buses smell like brakes?' He asked the driver, then a mechanic at his stop, and by lunch he had a real answer. It made me wonder how many things I just let sit unanswered instead of actually asking, so now I want to know, what's a question you've been carrying around that you never got around to asking anyone?
The part about spending the day asking people until someone knows is what got me. I used to figure stuff like that was just small talk and not worth bugging anyone over, but now I'm not so sure. Mine is why do motel ice machines always sound like they're dying, and I still haven't asked.
