A guy at the bus stop in Chicago changed how I tip

Waiting for the 146 bus near Belmont last Tuesday, an older man saw me fumbling for coins and just said, "you're overthinking it, a dollar is a dollar." He explained that for 20 years he drove a cab and always remembered the people who tipped small but consistent, not the ones who flashed big bills once. That got me thinking about my own habit of tipping big at sit-down spots but nothing at counters or quick places. Does anyone else split tips that way, or do you have a rule for when a tip just feels wrong?

Nah, counter workers work just as hard. Tip everyone or nobody.

Forget percentages, @the_william, just tip cash and call it done.
