Took 4 winters to finally get the wood stove draft right
Last week after the snowstorm, the fire caught on the first match instead of filling the living room with smoke. Took me reading the manual again and swapping to a 6 inch insulated pipe, the one from Tractor Supply in Concord. Anyone else fight their chimney draft this long or was it just me?

...but my buddy Mark had the same exact problem with his place up in Littleton. He swapped pipes, re-read the manual like three times, even had a guy come look at it who charged him a hundred bucks just to say "it's fine."
Turns out the chimney was too short for the ridge of his roof. The wind would just push the smoke straight back down. He added two feet of pipe and it was like night and day, first fire after that lit up clean as could be.
Four winters is a long haul though. I think most people just live with a smoky living room and call it "character" or something. You're probably in the top one percent of stubborn people who actually fix it.
