That $800 water softener I installed last winter was a total waste

I put in a fancy water softener at my place in Concord back in January thinking it would help with the hard water spots on my dishes and pipes. But it didn't do a thing for the iron staining in my toilets and actually made my water taste a little weird. The guy at the plumbing supply store warned me about high iron content in certain wells but I figured a softener would handle everything. Has anyone else in central NH had this problem where a softener just doesn't cut it for well water?

Gotta get a separate iron filter for that, softeners don't touch iron.

Oh wait really? I had a buddy who dropped like 4 grand on one of those high-end softener setups and his water still came out looking like rusty tea, haha. He was so pissed, thought he got ripped off until a plumber told him the same thing you're saying. Ended up having to get a separate iron filter after all that money, what a nightmare lol. Softeners are great for hardness but iron is a whole different beast, learned that from watching him deal with it.
