My well pump gave up at 5 AM on a 20 degree morning
Water stopped mid-shower on Tuesday, right before work. Plumber said the pressure switch froze up, then the whole pump followed. That was $850 I did not have planned. Replaced it with a 1/2 HP submersible and it runs fine now, but is there anything else I should be checking before January hits? Has anyone else dealt with this in the Lakes Region?

Did you actually check the pressure tank before you paid for that new pump? A dead or waterlogged tank kills pumps quick, and it sounds like nobody tested it. Plumbers love selling you a pump when the real problem is the tank holding pressure wrong. In the Lakes Region, cold ground shifts things around, so your wiring connections could be loose too, and that causes the same freezing symptoms. I'd say you jumped the gun on the replacement and probably could have fixed the switch for thirty bucks. Keep an eye on that tank gauge, because if it drops fast, you'll be calling that guy again in January.
