A guy at the Concord diner told me I was storing my firewood wrong
I've been stacking firewood against my house for years like everyone else around here. Last week this older fella at the Red Blazer saw me loading up my truck and said I was asking for termites and rot. He told me to keep it at least 2 feet from the foundation and off the ground on pallets. I moved it all last weekend and already notice the bottom logs drying out way better. Anyone else store their wood away from the house or am I just late to the game?

That old timer at the Red Blazer knew what he was talking about. Had the same thing happen to me a few years back but with a guy at the hardware store. He told me to stack my wood in a single row instead of that crisscross pile I always did. Also said to cover just the top with a tarp and leave the sides open for air flow. Didn't believe him at first but tried it with one stack and it made a huge difference. The bugs and dampness dropped way down after that. Now I won't stack wood any other way.

Single row is the way to go. Keeps the air moving through the whole stack so nothing stays wet too long. @the_elliot, I use pallets under mine to keep the bottom off the ground, makes a world of difference too. Leave that tarp loose on top, don't strap it down tight, or you'll trap moisture underneath and get rot.
