The grocery store demo guy made me rethink my whole spice rack
Went to the big chain store in Tacoma last Saturday and this older fella was handing out samples of some chili blend. He told me he's been using the same jar for 11 years and just tops it off when it gets low, and that switching to that method saved him from buying new spices every few months. I stood there for like 15 minutes while he explained how stale ground cumin was why my chilis always tasted flat. Got home and checked my own jars, turns out half of them are from 2019 or older. Anyone else ever had a random demo guy totally change how they handle their pantry?

Different take on this one. Fresh ground pepper and whole spices matter but old cumin is still cumin. I've got jars from 2015 that taste fine in a slow cooker chili. The heat and other stuff masks it anyway. Demo guys are salesman first, cooks second.
