My oven runs 25 degrees hot and I only caught it because of a $6 thermometer from Walmart
I was burning everything I baked. Cookies came out with black bottoms, cornbread was dry, and my roast chicken hit 180 in the breast way too fast. I thought it was me, or maybe my pans. After 3 weeks of ruined dinners I grabbed a $6 oven thermometer at the Walmart on Airport Road and hung it on the middle rack. Set the dial to 350 and waited 20 minutes. That thing read 375 on the nose. Every single time. So I started setting my oven to 325 when a recipe says 350, and everything came out right. The real test was a batch of chocolate chip cookies last Tuesday. Same dough, same sheet pan, 12 minutes at the fake 325. Perfectly golden. If you bake at home and things keep coming out wrong, spend the $6 before you blame your recipe. Do any of you have an oven that lies to you, and did you figure out the offset or just learn to live with it?
