Update: the pot sherd I found near Abiquiu last spring got dated to 1275, and it changed how I walk the site
I was walking a dry wash outside Abiquiu, New Mexico last April and picked up a black-on-white sherd half buried in the sand, mostly because the pattern caught my eye. I turned it in to the site office like you are supposed to, and last week a volunteer emailed me the lab result: roughly 1275, which puts it right at the end of the pueblo occupation there. Since then I have started walking in slow lines instead of wandering, and I take a photo of anything I touch so the spot is recorded. It sounds small, but knowing one plain-looking piece had that much age in it made me pay attention to the ground under my boots. Has anyone else had a random surface find come back with a date that surprised them?
