Rant: The trench they dug at Vindolanda in 2023 keeps getting reburied and I have questions
I hiked Hadrian's Wall last month and stopped at the Vindolanda site near Hexham, and one of the volunteers pointed out a spot where they backfilled a whole excavation from 2023. She said they only keep about 25 percent of what they dig open, the rest goes back under soil to protect it. I get that wood and leather rot once they hit air, but it felt weird standing on top of a fort that just got buried again on purpose. Does anyone know how they decide which trenches stay open for visitors and which get covered back up?
