My trowel hit something at a dig outside Tucson last week and I still feel bad about what I did next
Two Saturdays ago I was at a site near Tucson with a local group, working a unit I had already troweled down about 15 centimeters. I felt a hard scrape, got excited, and scraped the dirt back with my trowel tip before I even stopped to think. Turned out to be a piece of a decorated ceramic rim, and my trowel left a fresh gouge right across the painted band. Our site lead, a woman named Dana who has been doing this for 20 years, just looked at it and said, that mark is going to outlive both of us. This is my second season out there, and I knew better than to dig straight into a contact. So how do you all slow yourselves down when you feel that first hard tap under the trowel?
