My ground-penetrating radar rental near Cahokia turned up nothing, then a shovel did the trick
I rented a GPR unit for a weekend survey outside St. Louis, about 3 miles from Cahokia Mounds, hoping to find some buried wall lines on a friend's farm. The display showed uniform soil density for hours, and honestly I thought I wasted the $180 rental fee. On day two I got bored and dug a test pit at random, and about 2 feet down I hit a neat row of fire-cracked rock and charcoal flecks. Turns out the radar was picking up modern drainage pipe interference, and the real feature was too shallow and subtle for the machine's settings. I learned that sometimes old-school probing and a sharp eye beats expensive tech, especially on disturbed ground. Has anyone else had a geophysical survey miss something obvious that a simple shovel found?
