Just got back from Mesa Verde and noticed something odd about the cliff dwelling restoration
I visited Mesa Verde last weekend and saw that one of the Spruce Tree House walls had a patch that looked way newer than the rest, like a different color and texture. The ranger said they used a modern mortar mix to stabilize it back in the 90s. Has anyone else seen mismatched repairs at ancient sites?

ellis.susan, I get what you're saying about your drywall. It is frustrating when a repair sticks out like a sore thumb. But with these ancient sites, it's a whole different kind of problem. That modern mortar patch at Spruce Tree House sounds like a well-meaning but clumsy fix from back when they didn't know any better. It's a shame because it breaks the illusion of stepping back in time. I've seen similar patches at some of the old stone walls near my place, and it always makes me wonder why they couldn't have tried harder to match the original materials. It just takes a little bit of the magic away.
