Grad student at a dig in Cyprus handed me a 2,000 year old oil lamp and said 'careful, that's older than your country'
I was volunteering on a survey near Paphos back in 2019, mostly sifting dirt and tagging bags, when this archaeology PhD student named Dana pulled a small bronze lamp out of the trench. She didn't hand it to the lab tech or the site director, she walked it over to me and put it in my gloved hands. I remember she just said 'careful, that's older than your country' and then went back to troweling like it was nothing. That line stuck with me way more than any lecture I sat through. How do you all handle that moment when a real artifact lands in your hands for the first time? Does the weight of it ever stop hitting you?
