A talk with a volunteer at a dig site in Taos made me see pottery shards differently.
She said 'Every chip is a story, not just a piece of a pot,' while we were sifting dirt. Has a small find ever changed how you think about a whole site?

Look at it under a microscope and that chip of dirt becomes a whole world. You can see bits of old plants, maybe even pollen from flowers that died out centuries ago. It's like a tiny time capsule of everything that happened in that one spot, from weather to what lived there. Honestly, the story of the whole place is written in those little pieces if you know how to look.

Wait, so a tiny speck of dirt has more history than most people's family trees? That's kinda wild when you think about it. Makes you wonder what everyday stuff we're just walking over without a clue.
