Used to think cabling was a gimmick until a storm proved me wrong
I had this big red oak in my backyard in Ohio that I figured was fine on its own. Last spring a heavy wet snow split a major limb right down the middle, and I had to pay $400 for an emergency removal. My neighbor who does tree work showed me how a simple cable install could have braced it and saved me the headache. Has anyone else had a close call that changed their mind about support systems?

Had a similar thing with a silver maple a few years back. Always thought those cables looked ugly and figured the tree could handle itself. Then a windstorm took out one of the main leaders and it landed right on my fence. Cost me double what you paid to get the whole thing sorted. After that I let my arborist buddy install a couple cables on the other big trees I had. Three years later and they havent budged during any storm. Wish I had just done it sooner instead of learning the hard way.

Did you end up having to replace that section of fence too? It stinks when you think you're saving money by skipping something, only to end up paying way more later.
