That old arborist I met at the job site told me to stop chipping with the grain

He watched me feed a big elm limb into the chipper and just goes 'you're working way too hard, flip it around and let the knives catch the grain going the other way' - cut my chipping time by like a third that same afternoon, has anyone else gotten a tip like that that felt obvious after the fact?

Gotta disagree on this one actually. Feeding against the grain creates way more kickback and jams up the chipper rollers something fierce. Tried it a few times and spent more time unclogging than I saved. Did you run into any problems with branches bouncing back at you?

Worst case you just pull the branch out and try the other way, it's not like you're defusing a bomb.
