Spent $340 on a tree climbing course that taught me less than a $20 library book
I signed up for a weekend tree climbing course in Portland about 4 months ago and it cost me $340. The instructor spent most of Saturday going over knot tying that I already knew from my old man, and Sunday was basically just watching him climb while we stood around. The one thing I actually picked up was a tip about using a friction saver, but I could have learned that from a YouTube video in 10 minutes. Meanwhile a $20 used copy of The Tree Climber's Companion taught me way more about positioning and rope management than that whole weekend did. I get that hands-on learning matters but I should have saved that money and just practiced on the oaks in my backyard. Has anyone else taken a paid climbing course that actually felt worth the money? I am curious if it is just the ones in my area that are weak.
