Saw some crazy root flare issues at a park in Arlington yesterday

I was walking through the new development near the lake and noticed about 7 or 8 young oaks planted way too deep. The trunks were basically going straight into the ground like telephone poles. Has anyone else dealt with getting a city or developer to fix that kind of thing?

Did you read that article about trees suffocating when their trunks are buried that deep?

oh man, that article hit close to home for me. i have a buddy who planted a maple tree in his front yard a few years back, and he piled up like 6 inches of mulch around the base 'cause he thought it looked nice. fast forward a year and the tree started dropping leaves in july, just looking totally sad and yellow. he called an arborist and they dug down and found the trunk was basically rotting under all that mulch, the bark was all soft and peeling off. they told him the tree was suffocating because the roots need to breathe too, not just the leaves. he ended up having to pull the whole thing out, and now he's real careful about not burying any trunk on his new trees.
