Rant: My neighborhood keeps topping all the oaks
I've seen a lot of folks around here cutting the tops off their oak trees to make them smaller. It looks bad and hurts the trees in the long run. The big oak on Elm Street got topped last week and now it's just a bunch of stubs. This practice can lead to decay and weak growth, which we all know as arborists. Trees need their crowns to stay healthy and strong. If people want smaller trees, they should plant the right kind from the start. It's frustrating to watch this happen over and over without any advice being given.

Yeah the "without any advice being given" part is real. I had a neighbor start doing that and I just walked over and said it's like cutting off all your fingers and expecting your hand to work right. They stopped because I put it in simple terms they could picture. Sometimes people just don't know.

Disagree with @brian572 here because making things too simple can backfire. In tech support, saying 'just restart the computer' often misses deeper software bugs. People might fix it for now, but without knowing why, the issue comes back. Making it too simple can seem dismissive if someone already tried basic steps. It forgets that some problems need full explanations to really help.

Your point about simple terms making things click is spot on. Sometimes folks just need a clear picture to get why their action is wrong. @finley820 brought up tech support where restarting might hide real bugs, and that's fair too. The key is knowing when a quick fix helps versus when a deeper look is needed. In daily life stuff like your neighbor, a simple analogy works great because the problem is straightforward. For complex issues, skipping details can cause more trouble later.
