Old climbing arborist told me to leave my spikes at home...

He said if I'm pruning trees for a living, spikes ruin the bark every time. I thought he was being dramatic until I saw the damage on a maple I worked 6 months ago - has anyone else switched to footlocking just to avoid the scars?

Man yeah I've been there. Footlocking takes some getting used to but once you get the rhythm down it's way cleaner on the tree. I keep my spikes for removals only now, straight up.

Hearing you loud and clear on that. I remember wrecking a nice oak once with spikes when I could have just footlocked and spared the bark. It made me feel pretty bad honestly. Now I only pull them out for hazard removals or when the tree is already toast.
