My neighbor swore by topping oaks and said it was fine for 20 years
He finally had to take down his 50 foot red oak last week after the top half rotted out. Anyone else deal with clients who still think topping is acceptable?

Ha, at least my design clients can't kill a tree with bad opinions.

Actually there's one weird exception I remember from forestry school. Arborists can kill a tree with bad pruning cuts that leave stubs or flush cuts, and those count as "design" decisions. I knew a guy named Tom who worked for a landscaping company and they'd top oak trees like they were hedges. Killed three mature red oaks that way before the client figured it out. Bad design definitely kills trees, just slower than a chainsaw.
