I was pruning my Japanese maples in the worst possible month for 12 seasons straight
Had a buddy from the Portland area come look at my landscape job last Tuesday and he just stared at my cuts for a minute before saying anything. He asked when I did the work, and when I told him late spring every time, he pulled out his phone and showed me a chart of sap flow for acer palmatum. I had been cutting right when the trees push hardest, which is why my clients kept calling me back about bleeding wounds and weak regrowth. He said the window around late winter dormancy, before buds swell, is night and day different for healing. We walked his own property where he trims in February, and the callus wood on his cuts looked like it had been sealed with wax compared to my messy stubs. Anyone else here switch their pruning calendar around for maples specifically, or do you just work with whatever the client schedule allows?
