I thought topping was overrated until a windstorm took half a maple in my neighbor's yard
I've been in the tree game around Cedar Rapids for a while and always told folks topping was a waste of money and bad for the tree. Then last spring a 60 mph gust split a 40 foot silver maple right down the middle of the crown, and the whole mess landed on a fence and a parked trailer. The homeowner had paid someone 300 bucks to top it a few seasons back and I had told her it was a bad idea. Seeing that split made me look at how topping forces all that weak new growth into one tight clump, and I had to admit she was scared for a reason. Now I'm trying to figure out how to explain the real fix to folks who just want the tree shorter, so what do you all say to push back on topping without sounding like a know it all?
