I finally changed my climbing technique after a near miss in a white oak in Portland

I was up in a big white oak in a residential area near Laurelhurst Park when a dead limb I thought was solid let go right next to my line. It made me rethink how I assess decay from the ground and whether I rely too much on visual cues. Do you guys trust your gut more or do you always probe suspect branches before committing your weight?

Just the sound of that would be enough to make me second guess everything. Always tap first, trust nothing.

Yeah that hollow sound is definitely a warning you can feel in your gut.
