Had my doubts about air spading, but it saved a mature oak today
I've always been skeptical of air spading for compacted soil around trees. Figured it was just another upsell. But last month I used one on this 80 year old oak at a job near downtown Austin, and the root flare was buried under 8 inches of fill dirt. After clearing it out and adding compost, the tree already looks way healthier. Has anyone else seen big results from this thing?

Had a similar experience on a job in north Houston where a 50 year old live oak was showing early decline. Turned out the root flare was completely invisible under 12 inches of clay fill from a pool excavation years earlier. The air spade made quick work of it, and within two months we got a full canopy response and way better color. Did you happen to check for girdling roots while you had the soil cleared away? That's usually the next thing I find after exposing the flare.
