Found out from an ISA certified guy that most big box store trees are planted way too deep

Ngl, I checked the root flare on a maple I bought from Home Depot last spring and the first big root was almost 4 inches below the soil line, has anyone else noticed this with nursery stock?

Did you see that article from the Extension office about how container grown trees often have that same problem? They said nurseries pile on extra soil to keep the roots stable during shipping, but it ends up smothering the tree later if you don't fix it.

Is that really the main issue though? I've seen plenty of container trees do fine if you just loosen the roots before planting, and the extra soil usually washes away pretty quick.
