Finally seeing new buds on a client's stressed-out birch.
We did some root zone care last fall, and it paid off. How do you handle trees that seem beyond help?

Wow, that stubborn hope when a tree fights back is everything, isn't it?

That "stubborn hope" line really hit me. My friend had this huge old maple in her yard that got absolutely shredded in a bad storm, huge branch torn right off. Everyone said it was a goner. But next spring, a whole bunch of those whirly seed pods sprouted right from the wound spot on the trunk itself, like it was pouring all its life into making new ones. It felt less like surviving and more like it was actually FIGHTING to leave something behind. That image has stuck with me for years.

Read about trees pumping out toxins to keep pests away, nature's own defense system.
