A climber in Asheville told me to quit spiking my removals and I blew him off for 2 seasons
So I've been doing removals with spikes on every single tree for like 5 seasons now, even on trims where I should know better. Figured it was faster and who cares on a tree that's getting dropped anyway. Then back in April I was on a big white oak removal in Asheville and this older climber named Dale watched me gaff up a spar and he just shook his head and said "you're stressing every tree you touch, even the dead ones." I kind of laughed it off at first. But then he showed me his pruning cuts from a job 3 years back, same street, and the trees he'd footlocked and rope climbed were throwing out clean woundwood while the ones he spiked had rot pockets starting. That stuck with me. I bought a foot ascender and a Pantin the next week and I've been rope walking all my prunes since. Slower on the way up, yeah, but my cuts are cleaner and I'm not tearing up cambium on stuff that's staying. Wondering if anyone else made the switch late or if I'm just behind the times here.
