Went to inspect a used washer in St. Louis and found something odd

I drove out to a house in St. Louis yesterday to look at a used washer for a client, and the drum had this sticky film all over it that smelled like burnt sugar. Took me 20 minutes with a degreaser and hot water to get it off, but now I'm wondering if it was from a dryer sheet or something worse. Has anyone else run into weird residue inside a washer drum that wasn't just mold or soap build up?
