I finally flooded a customer's kitchen on a dishwasher call in Portland last Tuesday

I was swapping a fill valve on a 5 year old Whirlpool and didn't double check the hose clamp was tight before turning the water back on. Water shot out under the sink and soaked the laminate floor before I could shut the supply off. Anyone else ever have a rookie mistake like this blow up in your face with a customer watching?

Honestly, that exact scenario is why I always triple check now too. I had a similar thing happen but with a washing machine hose, and the water flooded into their dining room before I even knew it was happening. The customer was standing right there watching me the whole time, and I felt my face turn beet red when the water started hitting the floor. It's one of those lessons you only need to learn once, but man does it stick with you. I started carrying a small plastic tub and a roll of shop towels in my van specifically for those "just in case" moments. Tbh, I think every tech has that one job that haunts them a little bit.

That sink flooding thing is a classic example of how the smallest detail gets you. It's like rushing to put gas in the car at 7am and forgetting to screw the gas cap back on before you drive off. You see the cap hanging there and just know you're gonna smell fumes all week. Same deal with those clamps. One loose clamp and you're mopping up a stranger's kitchen floor while they stand there in disbelief. It almost makes you wonder if we're all just one forgotten step away from some kind of disaster every single day.

Knew a guy who left a valve open overnight cleaning a system.
