Finally caved and bought a decent multimeter after years of cheap ones

Old buddy Dave from the supply house kept telling me my $20 meter was giving false readings on compressor windings. Laughed it off until I swapped a perfectly good start capacitor last Tuesday on a job in Allentown. Anyone else have a cheap tool cost them more time than it saved?

Are you sure it was really the meter's fault though? I mean, those cheap ones can be off a bit but swapping a good capacitor sounds like you might have had a brain fart that day. We all have them, especially on a Tuesday in Allentown... they got weird energy over there. If your meter was consistently wrong by a mile, you'd have noticed way before now on other jobs. Sometimes a tool is just a scapegoat for a bad call we made in the heat of the moment. I'd give the old meter another week before you write it off completely.
