Dropped $140 on a used manifold gauge set off Marketplace and the low side won't hold a vacuum
Seller swore it worked fine but the seal is toast, so now I'm out the cash plus $30 in refrigerant on a fridge I could've fixed with my old $50 set, and I'm curious if anyone else has been burned buying used tools online or if I'm just the unlucky one.
That $140 Marketplace gauge set sounds like my $75 air compressor from a guy named Dale who swore it "ran like new" and then died on the second tire. I once bought a used vacuum pump off Craigslist that held vacuum about as well as a screen door holds water, so you are not alone in this club. Buying used tools online is basically gambling, except the house always wins and the house is some guy in a truck. The worst part is you never find out the thing is junk until you already spent money on the job. Next time I'd just pressure test the seals before handing over cash, or stick with the $50 set that actually works.
