Debate: Should we still honor OEM part numbers or just wing it with a generic match?

Last month a customer in St. Louis yelled at me for swapping a $12 universal part instead of the $45 OEM spec one for their 3-year-old GE dryer, after I fixed it in 20 minutes flat, but my usual buddy in the trade swears by generics every time on old machines-what side do you lean on and why?

Most times the generic is fine, but some parts are worth the extra money for reliability.

Had a buddy put a generic fuel pump in his truck once. Lasted about three months before it started making sounds like a dying blender. Spent twice as much on the OEM replacement and that one's been running five years now. Some things you just don't cheap out on.
