Crossed 500 dryer belt replacements this week, which got me thinking about the 'right' way
Some techs swear by pulling the whole drum every time for a clean install, but I've found a shortcut that saves 15 minutes and hasn't failed me yet. Which side are you on, and what's your go-to method for a Whirlpool direct drive?

500 belts without pulling the drum? That's wild. You must have the patience of a saint to thread it through the pulley gap. I tried that once on a Maytag and shredded the new belt on the motor shaft. Now I just yank the drum, clean the spider arm while I'm in there.

What's the trick to not shredding the belt on the motor shaft? I've always wondered if there's a specific angle or a tool that makes it easier to slip it through.

The last time I tried to finesse a belt through a pulley gap without pulling the drum, I ended up with a shredded piece of rubber that looked like a bad toupee. Andrew854 is probably laughing at me from his comfy couch while I'm still picking belt fragments out of my knuckles. Honestly, I think the only trick is to either have three hands or just accept that you're going to sacrifice at least one belt to the motor shaft gods. I'd rather clean the spider arm and do it right than play that guessing game again.
