TIL the master gardeners at the Cedar Rapids library compost class keep their scraps in a bucket of sawdust, not a fancy bin
I went to a free class at the downtown library branch last Saturday mostly to get out of the house, and the teacher pulled out this old 5 gallon bucket with a lid. She said she just layers food scraps with sawdust from a woodshop down the street and stirs it every few days. I had been fighting fruit flies for a month with my countertop bin, so I tried the sawdust thing with a $4 bag from the hardware store and my kitchen finally does not smell. If you live near a shop that gives away sawdust, is there any reason not to use it, or does the type of wood matter?
