Saw the smell disappear after switching to a sealed bucket system
For two years I fought fruit flies and that sour garbage stink using a open bin under my sink. Last month I grabbed a 5 gallon bucket with a gasket lid and started layering every scrap with shredded paper from my office. The difference showed up in about a week, no more smell when I cracked the lid to add coffee grounds. Turns out the air seal plus a carbon filter in the lid actually works, not just marketing junk. I still get a little musty whiff when I open it, but my kitchen finally smells like dinner, not rot. Anyone else try the gasket bucket route or stick with a fancy electric composter?

Did you seal the lid full time or just snap it shut between adds? Because I used to be a total skeptic on the gasket buckets, figured it was just a way to charge double for a plastic pail. But after reading this, I grabbed one on a whim and honestly it's a night and day difference. I was ready to fight anyone who said a sealed bin could beat the open pile method, but the smell really does just stay put now. I still get a whiff of that musty funk when I pop it, but it's NOTHING like the old sour stink that used to hit me every time I walked in the kitchen.

@williams90 still forget the lid sometimes, my kitchen smells like my own failed science experiment.
