Saw a Bokashi setup at a friend's place in Brooklyn and it changed my mind

I went to Jenna's apartment in Bushwick last weekend and she had this bucket system with a spigot, just sitting under her sink. She said it doesn't smell at all because you drain the liquid every 3 days, and she's been doing it for 6 months. Has anyone else tried Bokashi after being scared off by the whole anaerobic thing?

My kitchen compost bin used to get fruit flies every summer until I switched to Bokashi last April. I keep the bucket right next to my sink and drain it every Sunday and Wednesday like clockwork. The liquid feed is a nice bonus too, my houseplants have never looked better since I started diluting it for them.

Oh man, that part about draining the liquid every 3 days is exactly what sold me too. I had a friend who swore by her Bokashi bucket and I was like "no way, that's gonna stink up the whole place." But she let me come over and check it out and I was shocked. The liquid comes out looking like iced tea and it doesn't smell like garbage at all. I started my own setup about a year ago and I actually keep it in my kitchen pantry now, no issues. The only time I ever got a smell was when I forgot to drain it for like a week and that was totally my fault. It's honestly way less gross than I thought it would be.
