Realized I was layering my compost bin all wrong after 3 months of stink
I kept getting this sour smell from my countertop bin no matter how much carbon I added. Then my friend Sarah pointed out that I was just tossing greens on top instead of burying them under browns. Turns out the food was rotting before it mixed with the bedding. Now I push everything down and add a layer of shredded paper on top after each addition. Anyone else have a dumb composting habit they fixed way later than they should have?

Burying them under browns" is the part I was missing too. I have a dedicated bag of shredded junk mail next to the bin now so I always remember to cover new scraps.

Oh wait @luna_kim40 so do you use like regular office shredder or a crosscut one for that junk mail?
