My sister in Austin called my compost setup 'a science experiment gone wrong'

She said it looked like I was trying to grow a new life form, not recycle coffee grounds. Has anyone else had a friend totally misread their compost bin?

My compost in Portland last year got so hot it steamed on cold mornings. Honestly, if it's not breaking down into something useful, who cares what it looks like? My pile has sprouted potatoes and attracted more raccoons than I can count. It's just rotting food, not a statement on your life skills. Does your sister get this worked up about her actual trash can?

Exactly. People treat basic tasks like they're a performance review now. My compost bin is just a wet box of old salad, not a report card. We've lost the plot on what actually matters.
