My neighbor told me my compost bin smelled because of the lid, not the scraps
Ran a little 5 gallon bucket setup under the sink for about 6 weeks. Thought I was doing everything right, coffee grounds, veggie peels, shredded paper. But it got that sour rotten smell every few days. I kept adding more baking soda and it kept coming back.
My neighbor who gardens saw me dumping it out and said, "You're sealing it too tight. That thing needs air holes or it turns into a swamp." I had one of those snap on lids with a rubber seal. Drilled 8 small holes around the top rim and lined it with a mesh screen to keep fruit flies out. Smell was gone within 2 days.
Turns out the bad smell wasn't the food, it was the anaerobic bacteria from no airflow. Anyone else deal with this? How do you guys handle ventilation without making your whole kitchen smell like a farm?
Six weeks of coffee grounds and veggie peels and I never once thought about airflow, I just kept dumping baking soda in there like it was a science experiment gone wrong. Drilling holes felt like admitting defeat but two days later the smell was gone, so joke's on me.
