My neighbor told me my bokashi bucket was gonna attract rats... now I'm second guessing everything
I was out on the balcony last week and this guy from 3B who gardens all the time sees my setup and says "you know that fermented stuff pulls rodents like crazy." I've been doing bokashi for about 4 months now with no issues but now I can't stop thinking about it. He claimed even a sealed bucket leaks smell through the spigot. Has anyone else had trouble with bokashi bringing unwanted visitors in an apartment complex? I'm on the 5th floor but still.

oh totally jumped in on this one, i mean i've been doing bokashi for like 2 years now on a second floor balcony and honestly i think the spigot thing is a bit overblown. idk maybe it's just me but if you keep the spigot clean and actually use the liquid regularly it's not like you're dripping fermented juice everywhere. the real thing is that the smell is super distinct and sweet so if anything is already sniffing around your building it might check it out, but i've never had a rat or even a mouse show interest and i'm in a kinda urban area with plenty of alley cats. maybe it's the whole "neighbor knows best" panic but i'd say give it another couple months before you worry too much, seals are pretty good on those buckets.

Oh man, I once convinced myself the smell from my bokashi was summoning every critter in a three-block radius. Turns out the only thing it attracted was my neighbor's cat who just wanted to lick the spigot. I even bought a rat trap out of pure paranoia and caught nothing but my own dignity in a splintered corner. So yeah, I feel your second-guessing pain. But honestly, my bucket has been quieter than my last relationship.
