My neighbor Deb said to just toss citrus peels in the bin and ignore the acidity warnings
She's been composting in her Boston studio for 8 years and swears all the worry about citrus killing worms is overblown. I tried it for a month and my bin actually smells less funky now - anyone else find the "no citrus" rule is more myth than fact?

Wait, a BOSTON studio? Like a tiny apartment with no outdoor space? And she's been composting citrus for 8 years in there?? That's insane but also kind of impressive.

Funny you mention that, my cousin tried composting in his NYC walkup for about six months. His landlord found out because the bin got this weird fruit fly situation (it was bad, like a whole cloud of them every time you opened the closet). He got a notice on his door saying "composting is strictly prohibited in common areas." So now he just throws orange peels in the trash and feels guilty about it. But eight years of citrus in a Boston studio? That's some next level commitment to the smell of rotting lemons.

Wait, is it really that serious though? I mean yeah fruit flies are annoying but you can get a bin with a good seal for like twenty bucks and stop smelling the lemons. Feels like people make composting into some big deal when really it's just throwing scraps in a bucket and maybe taking it out once a week.
