My homemade compost bin liner completely disintegrated after 3 weeks

I thought I was being smart and used that biodegradable bag from the grocery store as a liner for my countertop bucket. Big mistake. After three weeks of adding scraps, the bottom just gave out and I had apple cores and coffee grounds all over my kitchen floor at 6 AM on a Tuesday. Cleanup took forever and my whole apartment smelled like rotten veggie juice for hours. I ended up just tossing the mess and going back to a bare bucket that I rinse out every few days. Has anyone found a liner that actually holds up or do you all just raw dog it too?

Biodegradable stuff is a straight up lie most of the time. They need commercial facilities to actually break down, not your damp kitchen counter. That bag probably would've lasted a year in a landfill. It's like how "flushable" wipes will wreck your plumbing. Everything is marketed as eco-friendly but it's just greenwashing so you feel good buying it. Just use a bare bucket and deal with rinsing it out. That's the only thing that actually works.

Haha yeah I get your point @the_jessica, most of that stuff IS just marketing fluff. But I gotta say, my bin liner broke down in like 2 months just sitting in my backyard pile, not at some fancy facility. Maybe it depends on the brand or what you're putting in it?

Yo wtf @hugo_jones your bin liner actually broke down in your backyard pile?? That's wild cause mine turned into a slimy mess and fell apart way faster than I expected. Maybe it's hit or miss depending on what scraps you're tossing in there. I've given up on liners completely, just dumping scraps straight into a stainless steel bucket now and washing it out once a week.
