Read what @umaanderson said about getting used to a mild stink and it hit me. What's the actual line between normal household smell and a real problem? Like, my compost bin is outside, so I ignore it, but a kitchen trash can is inside and we empty it more. Is it just about what we have to look at, or is there a real rule? I feel like I have no idea what's actually okay anymore.

Honestly that "smelled like a dumpster" line is so real. Tbh I see this everywhere, where we just accept a low level of grossness as normal. Like a kitchen sponge that starts to smell, or that one reusable water bottle you forget to wash for a week. We live with the mild stink until someone points it out, and then you're like oh yeah, that is bad. It's weird what we get used to.
